2011 YAMAHA FZ6R

Click Thumbnail to download (size 1600 x 1200 pixels)

The innovative FZ6R offers features that make it easy for beginning riders to get started, like adjustable seat height.

The 2011 Yamaha FZ6R has a special ambience that makes you feel comfortable the minute you swing a leg over the seat. It is a sports bike that does not make any earth shattering claims; just a bike that will leave you smiling after each and every ride. Perhaps you are just getting started in motorcycling or have been around long enough to recognize that fun is not always determined by engine size or horsepower.

Hardcore. Not hard to afford.

The 2011 FZ6R offers features that make it easy for beginning riders to get started: a low seat height, grips that reach back to you, and a torquey, 600cc engine you won't outgrow anytime soon. Add a beautiful new diamond-steel frame, a sleep fairing, an Yamaha R6-style exhaust and a price that makes it way more affordable than it looks.

Somewhere between cruisers and supersport bikes exists a genre simply known as "sports" bikes.

The FZ6R fits perfectly into the less intense sport bike world with its easy to control power, light weight and low seat height. A slim compact chassis complements the fuel injected engine and its very linear throttle control. No lap records here, just a bike that inspires rider confidence and is a blast to ride.

Features

= Fuel Consumption * 18.1kpl/51.5mpg(Imp)
= Fuel injected, 600cc, DOHC, 4-valve, in-line 4 tuned for fun and ease of use
= Sporty styling and low seat height

ENGINE
Ultra-compact, 600cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC, 16-valve, slant block in-line four powerplant. This engine has been specially tuned for ease of riding with very linear power characteristics. It is loosely based on the FZ6 with revised cylinder head, crankcases, intake and exhaust systems plus a revised clutch and shifter assembly.

Compact, 4-valve cylinder head features the same size intake (25mm) and exhaust (22mm) valves as the FZ6 but the intake port shape has been narrowed for increased air velocity resulting in more linear throttle response.

Lightweight hollow camshafts feature revised lift and duration profiles (Vs the FZ6) providing excellent torque in the low and mid rpm range and also helping to achieve linear throttle control. Fuel economy is also optimized.

Automatic hydraulic-type cam chain tensioner reduces mechanical engine noise and maintenance.

One-piece cylinder and upper crankcase assembly provides superior engine and chassis rigidity as well as reducing weight.

Ceramic composite plated sleeveless cylinder bores provide greater heat dissipation for consistent power delivery and reduced frictional power losses. Sleeveless design also reduces weight.

Lightweight forged pistons connected to carburized connecting rods provide superior strength and reduced reciprocating mass for crisp throttle response and reduced vibration.

"Group-Type" Mikuni 32mm throttle body fuel injection provides outstanding throttle response and excellent fuel economy. Group fuel injection divides the four cylinders into two groups (1 & 4 and 2 & 3) with two injections of fuel for every 720 degrees of crank rotation.

Compact "high dynamic range" injectors use 4-hole / 2-direction spray type injectors for excellent throttle control, reduced emissions and great fuel economy.

A high powered, compact 32 bit ECU controls the ignition and fuel injection processes.

Compact slant-block engine uses a "Tri-Axis" stacked 6-speed transmission design to create a shorter engine (front to back) which allows for optimum engine placement in the frame for a balanced weight distribution and great handling.

"Inner push" type clutch release mechanism provides very light and smooth clutch lever action.

Shifter layout and design provides smooth, positive shifting.

Compact 4 into 2 into 1 "midship" style exhaust system features a 3-way catalytic converter which reduces harmful exhaust emissions (CO, HC, CO2 and NOx). The result is very clean running engine that easily surpasses strict EPA and EU European emission standards.

This "midship" style exhaust system concentrates mass in the centre of the bike and keeps the centre of gravity low for light agile handling at any speed.

High capacity radiator with ring-type cooling fan insures maximum cooling efficiency.

Liquid cooled oil cooler maintains consistent oil temperatures for extended engine and lubricant life.

Convenient spin-on type oil filter.

Maintenance-free transistor controlled ignition ensures fast starts and optimum engine performance.

Air Induction System (AIS) reduces harmful hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide (HC & CO) exhaust emissions.

CHASSIS/SUSPENSION
"Diamond-type", high tensile tube steel frame is used. The main frame tubes are 31.5mm in diameter and feature a minimum of welds and bends. Rigidity around the steering head and swingarm pivot has been optimized for excellent handling and stability.

This frame design helps to maintain one of the lowest seat heights (785mm / 30.1") in the 600 sports class.

The engine is mounted to the frame in 4 locations making it a stressed chassis member and enhancing handling qualities.

A box section steel swingarm compliments the frame and aids in providing a light handling feel.

Detachable steel rear sub frame reduces costs in the event of a "loop-out".

Conventional 41mm cartridge style fork provide great handling and excellent ride comfort. Plastic protectors help prevent tube damage due to stone chips. Wheel travel is 130mm (5.1").

"Link less" rear suspension means the rear shock mounts directly to the frame and swingarm without the use of linkages. The rear suspension system has been designed to provide a rising rate feeling without the additional weight of linkage arms and pivots. The shock features 7-way spring pre-load adjustability. Wheel travel is 130mm (5.1")

Dual 298mm floating front disc brakes are squeezed by a twin piston calipers. Braking performance is progressive and lever feel is excellent.

245mm rear disc brake with single piston caliper provides excellent stopping power.

Full fairing offers great wind and weather protection plus a stylish new design. An inner panel around the instrument area provides a clean, quality image for the "cockpit".

Stylish 17 litre (3.7 Imp. gal.) fuel tank provides an excellent riding range between fill ups.

Lightweight 5-spoke mag wheels are fitted with Z rated radial tires which reduce unsprung weight for light, agile handling.

Stylish two piece rider and passenger seat design offers excellent comfort. The rider portion of the seat is adjustable. The standard position is the lowest (785mm / 30.9") position with an ability to increase the rider seat height by 20mm or approximately ¾ of an inch.

Adjustable handlebar design. The traditional 7/8" steel handlebars not only offer a comfortable, more upright riding position but can also be adjusted 20mm (approximately ¾ of an inch) forward by rotating the handlebar mounting brackets 180 degrees. The traditional handlebar design also allows easy replacement to a different "bend" if so desired.

FZ1 inspired multi-function instrument assembly. Features include an analog tach, digital speedo, dual tripmeters, clock, fuel gauge and fuel reserve tripmeter plus a full range of warning lights.

Bright, single 60/55 watt halogen headlight

= 5-position adjustable front brake lever

Features

= Fuel Consumption * 17kpl/47mpg(Imp)
= ABS Brakes
= Advanced air management

ENGINE
1298cc, DOHC, 16-valve, liquid-cooled in-line four engine delivers serious power and torque (99.1 ft-lbs of torque @ 6000 rpm) for an unequalled spread of muscle over a wide RPM range. Red line is a surprisingly low 9,000 rpm for extended engine life.

Engine is a fully stressed chassis member, allowing for a lightweight yet rigid frame design for excellent handling.

One-piece cylinder and upper crankcase assembly provides tremendous engine rigidity that's lighter and stiffer than two-piece designs.

Specially designed four-valve per cylinder head features compact, side-driven double-overhead camshafts providing outstanding low to mid rpm torque and horsepower for effortless sport touring and great passing power.

Specially designed high lift intake and exhaust cams provide excellent torque and power characteristics well suited to sport touring.

Ceramic composite cylinder "bores" are a "liner less" design with the ceramic coating applied directly to the aluminium block to ensure uniform heat dissipation for consistent power delivery, reduced oil consumption, reduced friction and reduced weight.

High performance, short skirt, forged aluminium pistons are light weight for fast throttle response and also reduce reciprocating mass for less mechanical vibration. Compression ratio is 10.8:1

Specially designed, low-vibration crankshaft features two gear-driven secondary counterbalancers delivering a smooth ride, which enhances both rider and passenger comfort.

The crank uses carburized connecting rods for excellent strength and durability. Carburizing is a heat treating process that increases the carbon content on the outer surface of the rod increasing its strength and durability.

Automatic cam chain tensioner reduces both maintenance and engine mechanical noise.

Advanced electronic fuel injection (EFI) system is ideal for long-distance sport-touring. The 42mm throttle body fuel injection system with 4-hole Nippon injectors delivers crisp, seamless throttle response regardless of weather or altitude. This is a closed loop fuel injection system, with an oxygen sensor that monitors the amount of oxygen in the spent exhaust gases and adjusts the fuel -air mixture via the ECU and FI system for maximum performance with minimum emissions. The benefits of fuel injection include choke-free starting, steady idling during warm up, excellent fuel economy, and reduced emissions. The oxygen sensor is located before the mufflers, so the use of slip-on mufflers will not affect this system.

Compact engine design uses a stacked "Tri-Axis" transmission (transmission shafts are stacked to minimize powerplant size front to back). The stacked design reduces engine length and centralizes mass, thereby allowing the engineers the ability to place the engine in the "sweet spot" of the frame for optimized front and rear weight distribution which provides excellent handling characteristics.

Wide ratio 5-speed transmission utilizes widely spaced gear ratios delivering relaxed long-distance sport touring performance combined with seamless acceleration.

Special scissors-type primary driven gear helps prevent drive train backlash and significantly reduces transmission noise for greater rider comfort.

Light-action hydraulic clutch provides smooth, effortless shifting, minimizing both rider fatigue and maintenance. Shift shaft features a needle-roller bearing to reduce friction for silky-smooth shifting.

Clean, quiet shaft drive system is super-durable and low maintenance. This system features mechanical cam dampers in the drive pinion for quieter, smoother power delivery to the rear wheel.

4-into-1-into-2 stainless steel exhaust optimizes engine performance across the power band and utilizes four, three-way catalytic converters to reduce emissions. Two are located in the junction "box" under the engine and one in each muffler. Combined with the Air Induction System (AIS), the FJR1300 is one of the cleanest-running large-capacity motorcycle engines ever built. It easily exceeds the strict European EU-3 emission standards.

Heated oxygen sensor provides precise fuel - air ratio information to the fuel injection system to reduce emissions even further, especially at lower engine temperatures.

Curved radiator uses twin ring-type fans for great heat dissipation and to aid in moving the hot air out of the cowl area for optimized air management and less heat to the rider. Ring type fans "pull" more air than a conventional type fan.

Easy-access cartridge-type spin-on oil filter makes oil changes a snap.

High capacity oil filter and large volume of engine oil (5 litres) provides extended service intervals between oil changes.

Excessive lean angle cut-out switch prevents the engine from running in the event of a tip over. The switch will activate at 70 degrees.

CHASSIS/SUSPENSION
Cast aluminium twin spar, diamond-type frame, features massive twin spars. This frame design is incredibly light and extremely rigid, the perfect combination for sharp, sport bike-like handling.

Fully detachable aluminium rear sub frame helps reduce weight while permitting easier rear shock access/maintenance.

Lightweight, cast aluminium swingarm. The special swingarm design incorporates the shaft drive into its left side to reduce unsprung weight for incredible handling and suspension performance.

Key chassis geometry figures include: caster angle = 26 degrees and trail of 109mm.

Fully adjustable 48mm cartridge-style forks offer 135mm (5.4") of wheel travel. The adjustable design allows the rider to tailor suspension settings to match rider weight, load and road conditions. Fork adjustments include: 6 - way spring preload, 21 - way compression damping and 17 - way rebound damping.

Adjustable link Monocross rear suspension with 125mm (4.8") of wheel travel features a handy, two-stage (hard/soft) spring preload adjustment lever that allows the rider to easily switch between solo and two-up preload settings. Other rear shock adjustments include: 18 - way rebound damping.

Dual 320mm front discs are squeezed by Nissin 4-piston calipers with independent brake pads for each piston. Computer controlled ABS is standard on the FJR1300.

282mm rear disc brake with opposed piston caliper provide outstanding stopping power. The caliper is mounted on the swingarm to reduce torque action for superior suspension and handling performance. The rear brake ABS system is also computer controlled.

The ABS or Anti Lock Braking System features a linear controlled 3 position system. The controlling ECU and the hydraulic unit are combined into a single compact unit that allows for mass centralization. When the ABS system senses impending wheel, lock-up via active type wheel sensors, the system regulates the hydraulic press to the point just before the wheel or wheels lock-up. The benefit of ABS is excellent control under hard braking or when braking on wet, slippery or loose surfaces. The ABS system helps prevents wheel lock up.

Unified braking system with computer controlled ABS. When the front brake is applied it activates 6 of the 8 front caliper pistons (all four LHS front pistons are activated, while only the "upper" two pistons on the RHS front caliper are activated). When applying the rear brake, both rear pistons activate and 2 front pistons activate (both rear caliper pistons are activated plus the two lower pistons on the front RHS

Lightweight cast-aluminium 3-spoke wheels are fitted with 120/70-ZR17 front and 180/55-ZR17 rear radial tires perfectly suited to both spirited solo riding or long-range trekking.

Adjustable handlebars offer three positions of adjustability. From the centre position, the bars can be adjusted 5.5 mm forward or 5.5mm back towards the rider. Total adjustment range is 11mm.

Adjustable, two-piece seat features an adjustment range of 20mm (0.8") for the rider portion of the seat. There are two steps of adjustment via specially designed eccentric rubbers. Different foam densities for the front and rear sections, ensure plush comfort for both rider and passenger.

Stylish yet aerodynamic full fairing provides excellent wind and weather protection. Air flow management has been optimized to reduce the amount of heat that flows to the rider. There are vents on the outside of each headlight to allow cool air into the cockpit and fuel tank areas. There is also a fresh air vent below the instrument assembly.

Middle cowl features a 2 - position adjustable visor / vent. The adjustment range is 30mm via quick turn fasteners. The rider can adjust these vents (30 mm or 1.2" range) to allow more or less air toward the rider's hip and leg area.

Small item storage compartment is located in the upper left side of the fairing. Inside this compartment is a 12 volt 30 watt DC power outlet for added convenience. The lid can be opened when the ignition is turned on. Its 1 litre capacity is perfect for small items such as cell phone, wallet, garage door opener etc.

Super convenient push button operated electrically adjustable windscreen. The windshield features a fresh air duct at the bottom to reduce the vacuum tendency (negative pressure) in the cockpit area. The range of height adjustment range is 136 mm (5.4"). The windshield can be easily raised for greater wind protection or lowered for a sportier profile via a convenient handlebar-mounted switch.

Quick-release luggage mounts mean fast removal of the 30 litre colour matched hard saddlebags. The FJR1300 has been designed to look great with or without the saddlebags installed. It takes mere seconds to install or remove the locking saddlebags or optional top case.

Ergonomically shaped, large-capacity 25-litre fuel tank offers an excellent riding range, and is constructed of steel allowing for the use of magnetic tank bags. The reserve portion is 5 litres. The under side of the tank improves air management.

Easy-to-read instrumentation includes an electronic analog speedometer and tachometer, LCD digital odometer, dual tripmeters, fuel and coolant temperature gauges, plus a clock as well as a range of warning lights. Other functions include outside air temperature, a gear position indicator and fuel consumption read out.

R1-inspired cat-eye dual 60/55-watt multi-reflector halogen headlights can be easily adjusted for two up riding. Left and right sides can be independently adjusted via conveniently located screw type knobs.

Sleek tail section helps reduce drag and features a sturdy rear passenger grab rail that can double as a small rack.

Immobilizer ignition system is designed to reduce the possibility of "ride away" theft. This system must recognize the "coded ignition key" in order for the unit to start. If the immobilizer ignition does not recognize the key (or a thief's screwdriver or other type of "jimmy tool") the bike will not start even if the ignition is turned or forced into the on position. If the system does not recognize the coded chip in the ignition key, it will not allow the ignition system, fuel pump or starter motor to function.

Features and Benefits (USA):
Key Features:
= Directly descended from our YZ motocrossers and WR off-road machines-even the original Yamaha YA-1 of 1955-the WR250X is here to make Yamaha's off-road prowess street accessible.
= Not exactly an enduro, a supermoto or a sportbike, the WR250X is for riders who ride mostly paved surfaces. Its sibling, the off-road inspired WR250R, is for riders who spend more time in the dirt.

Engine:
= 250cc liquid-cooled, DOHC engine with two titanium intake valves and two steel exhausts, forged piston and plated cylinder for outstanding durability.
= Pentroof combustion chamber with downdraft-type straight intake helps make excellent power across the rev band, with maximum power at 10,000 rpm.
= First use of fuel injection on a 250 Yamaha on/off-road bike. The system relies on input from a crank sensor, intake air pressure sensor and throttle position sensor feeding a compact ECU to provide optimum combustion.
= An ECU-controlled EXUP® exhaust valve, along with an electronic intake control valve, broadens the powerband.
= High lift cams have WPC surface treatment in which the surface is sprayed with fine powder at over 100 meters per second to increase surface hardness.
= Three-axis engine layout keeps the engine compact. Wet sump tucks between frame rails to keep the engine height down.
= Rare earth-type ACM alternator keeps the weight down while providing all the current needed to run the FI and lighting systems.
= Direct ignition coil sits atop the spark plug-another first on a Yamaha on/off-road model.
= Six-speed gearbox provides a wide spread of ratios, with shower-type lubrication for reliability. Special, light-action clutch makes shifting a snap.
= Tucked-in, three-chamber muffler helps keep mass centralized and the bike quiet.
= Electric start only: Leaving off the kickstarter keeps it light and simple.

Chassis/Suspension:
= 17-inch wheels mount radial street rubber in 110 front and 140mm rear widths and help lower the seat approximately 1.4 inch compared to the WR250R.
= One-tooth smaller rear sprocket (13/42) works with the smaller-diameter tires to bring out the WR250X's strong accelerating character.
= Stiffer springs front and rear and street-oriented damping settings reduce pitch compared to the WR250R for excellent pavement performance.
= YZ/WR250-inspired semi-double-cradle frame uses a main frame of cast and forged aluminum sections, with high-strength steel downtube for excellent strength and rigidity characteristics.
= Asymmetrical swingarm provides excellent strength/rigidity balance and a dynamic look. Cast aluminum crossmembers, extruded arms and a 22mm rear axle are carefully tuned for optimum handling.
= Fully adjustable 46mm fork provides 10.6 inches of wheel travel. A forged lower triple clamp and a cast upper one help give outstanding front-end feel. An aluminum steering stem reduces weight.
= Linkage-mounted rear shock provides 10.4 inches of travel with adjusters for compression damping, rebound damping and spring preload-and features a 14mm rod and 46mm cylinder for excellent damping and fade resistance.
= Wave brake rotors front and rear, including a large, 298mm front disc, reduce unsprung weight and provide excellent performance. Rear pedal is forged aluminum.

Additional Features:
= A slim, steel fuel tank is shaped with knee grip in mind, and the entire ergonomic layout is designed to make the rider feel like part of the bike.
= Narrow, YZ-inspired seat features gripper-type cover for great seat-of-the-pants feel. Seat height is 35.2 inches.
= WR enduro-style instrument panel provides excellent visibility in spite of the compact size. Basic mode provides speed, clock, tripmeter and self-diagnostic function. Measurement mode includes stopwatch, distance-compensating tripmeter, etc.
= Minimalist front and rear fenders are designed for function, simplicity and lightness.
= Bodywork with separate radiator heat outlet helps keep engine and rider cool.
= Lightweight headlight and LED taillight maximize visibility and draw less current.
= Separate clutch cover means easier serviceability.
= One-screw air filter serviceability.
= Adjustable front brake lever.
